As voting for the new leader of the SNP leader opens we look at the most recent candidates' debates and hustings and how they've been conducted. In particular we compare and contrast the style and content of the Sky debate and the STUG/National hustings. The BBC has hardly covered itself in glory this week with the Gary Lineker affair, Fiona Bruce's ill judged, to say the least, "One off" ...

The main campaign is over, the polls are open - but prior to the results coming in in two weeks, what have we learned so far based on 'all the campaign you're going to be allowed to see'?

Hot on the heels of last night's remarkable seventh Scot Goes Pop opinion poll (and I haven't even finished giving you the results of that one yet), I have an eighth for you.  Don't expect this sequence of events to make any logical sense, because it doesn't make sense, but it's happening anyway.  I commissioned Panelbase to conduct this new poll, and the question I'm releasing today...

TO be honest, I was extremely surprised that the new Scot Goes Pop poll, conducted by Find Out Now, has produced an outright majority in favour of independence.

For the seventh Scot Goes Pop opinion poll of voters in Scotland, I commissioned a different polling company from the two I've commissioned before.  Find Out Now are relative newcomers to political polling, but they're full members of the British Polling Council, and I believe this is already the fourth Scottish independence poll they've conducted.  And given the challenging...

The hypocrisy that has been on display on social media in recent hours from the current SNP establishment has been quite staggering.  Taking on Humza Yousaf so directly and scathingly on his poor record in government was a bold and high risk strategic choice by Kate Forbes and her advisers, and we'll have to wait and see whether it pays off or not - presumably the thinking is that they have...

Most people have found the SNP leadership election dispiriting, but if you look closely there are reasons for hope. Party democracy, a collegiate indy movement and a better scrutinised Scottish Government are still up for grabs.

After a number of false starts over a period of more than a year, I'm at last able to say: thank you for your patience, and I've now commissioned the seventh Scot Goes Pop opinion poll.  The wheels will soon be getting into motion, and the results will be with you well before the end of the SNP leadership election.  This new poll will be a bit shorter than the previous six, but I've done...

The SNP leadership contest is a watershed moment. It has thrown up serious questions about the character and continued dominance (or not) of the SNP, narrow range and quality of candidates, and the state of progressive politics in Scotland and the independence debate. Besides this, much of the current commentary reveals even more about the […]

Business for Scotland, the campaigning business network for pro-independence businesspeople, has written to all of the candidates in the SNP leadership race seeking clarity on how they intend to reset the SNP’s relationship with business and to explain their business and economic vision for an independent Scotland. Ten questions for the SNP leadership candidates. Do […]
