One of the supposed advantages of being British which those who oppose independence are so proud of used to be the freedom to criticise the government, the monarchy, the army, the establishment, or the myths and sacred cows of Britishness without any repercussion. This was the much vaunted tolerance which we were always told was […]

By Dr Mark McNaught In retrospect, the ‘Great’ Repeal Bill (GRB) for Scots may turn out to be historically analogous to the 2010 Ruling of the Spanish Constitutional Tribunal over the Catalan Statute of Autonomy. We already knew what David Mundell’s guarantees were worth, of course. So it’s not like we can exactly feign surprise at this. The best we can say is that at least this time it took four months for the Secretary Of State’s promise to completely and utterly collapse, not 48 hours.

In a month of positive statistics for Scotland – including unexpectedly high growth figures, continuing to lead the UK and hitting its own tough targets for hospital waiting times (which drew an incredibly petty and insulting response from Scottish Labour), and huge progress in rail punctuality (now also the best in the country) – perhaps the best of all […]

The Brexit farce has gone from being a widening of the democratic deficit to an attack on democracy and devolution. Scotland voted against this exercise in economic self-harm and is now having powers stripped by a centralising Conservative government clinging to the wreckage of their own absurd and unpopular rule.
